Beyond the Screen: How Virtual Events Build Real Community at NCA

As a virtual school rooted in connection and relationships, we understand the significance of creating shared experiences. These events, from Family Night to virtual field trips, are about celebrating learning and strengthening the bonds that make our school feel like a true community—no matter the distance.

Family Nights: A Tradition of Togetherness

Family Nights at NCA are all about connection. Whether we’re playing games, sharing stories, or exploring coding challenges as a team, these evenings invite families to step into their students’ world of learning. They're designed to be welcoming and low-pressure—come as you are, bring your curiosity, and prepare for a fun night.

These gatherings remind us that learning is most powerful when shared, and that a supportive learning environment includes teachers, students, and families.

The Hour of Code

During Computer Science Education Week, students participate in the Hour of Code, an annual event that introduces learners to computer programming in creative, hands-on ways. From drag-and-drop puzzles to interactive games, NCA students explore how technology works—and how they can shape it.

This event is especially powerful because it shows students that coding isn’t just for “tech experts.” It’s for curious kids who love problem-solving, storytelling, and thinking differently.

Exploring the Universe: A Virtual Field Trip to the Bell Museum

This spring, our students “traveled” to the Bell Museum for a virtual field trip filled with exploration and wonder. With guided tours, hands-on activities, and opportunities to ask real museum educators and scientists questions, K-5 students experienced the excitement of a museum visit without ever leaving home.

School isn’t just about sharing facts—it’s about fostering curiosity. At New Code Academy, we empower students to become lifelong learners: to ask questions, seek answers, and understand that their learning is limited only by the reach of their imagination. Virtual field trips like these are one way to bring the world to our students—reminding them that their learning has no borders.

These community events are designed with equity in mind. Keeping them virtual and free removes common barriers like transportation or cost, ensuring every student can participate, connect, and feel part of something bigger. It’s one of the many ways we create a more inclusive experience for all learners at NCA, regardless of their circumstances or background.

The NCA Talent Show: A Stage for Every Star

One of the most joyful and anticipated events of the year is the NCA Talent Show, where students get to showcase their unique skills and passions. From music and magic tricks to animation, storytelling, and dance, the talent show is a powerful reminder that every learner brings something special to our school.

And because it’s virtual, students can share their talents in a comfortable format—pre-recorded videos, live Google Meet performances, or even narrated slideshows. This format allows for more flexibility and comfort and enables students to showcase their talents to a wider audience, fostering a sense of community and support.

More Moments of Connection

Throughout the year, NCA offers many ways to connect: virtual read-alouds, spirit weeks, student-led coding demonstrations, and more. We love offering opportunities for students and families to celebrate learning and connect meaningfully. These events create space for friendships to grow, sometimes between people who might never have crossed paths otherwise!. Whether it’s a shared laugh during Family Night or cheering on a classmate in the talent show, these moments help build a sense of belonging that stretches across screens and miles.
